If you’re putting together a new bed, you’ve likely gotten stuck on trying to figure out if it’s better to go with a comforter or a duvet. Both have their positives and negatives, but they don’t make it easy to choose one or the other. That’s why we’re going to cover what the difference is between duvets and comforters. That way, you can more easily conclude which will best suit you.

Comforter

Let’s begin with the classic comforter. These are more popular in America, and you can find them just about anywhere. The comforter is a single piece that is quilted together. This keeps the fluff inside from moving all over the place, clumping together as you sleep. Due to the fact that it’s a single piece, though, they can be a challenge to clean, and some aren’t machine washer safe.

Comforters tend to keep you warmer than duvets, which is great for some people and a detriment to others. Regardless of preference, this makes comforters a better choice for winter. Another plus is many comforters come with matching sheets, so a lot of the design work is done for you.

Duvet

Now it’s time for the European counterpart: the duvet. However, these have become much more popular in the States in recent years. This could be because they’re much easier to clean. Duvets come in two parts: a cover and an insert. All you have to do to clean it is remove the cover and throw it in the washer. Unfortunately, taking it off and putting it back on can be a bit of a challenge.

Many people find this option worth it, despite the possible troubles, because it allows for much more versatility and customization. Plus, if a part of a duvet goes bad, you don’t have to replace the whole thing. Another thing to note, though, is not all of them are quilted like comforters, so you might experience some clumping with the insert.

Our Favorite

As you can see from our breakdown, the difference between duvets and comforters is quite noticeable. That means it really comes down to what benefits you’re looking for when determining which one you want. If you asked us for our favorite, though, we’d have to say the duvet. If you like them too, then we’d recommend that you check out our eucalyptus lyocell duvet cover that we offer on our website. We’re sure you won’t be disappointed.
