6 Fall Home Decor Ideas to Welcome the Season

As summer gives way to fall, your home can shift with the season without needing a complete decor overhaul. As a matter of fact, you don't need to replace everything at once! Focus on smaller changes like warmer, deeper colors, seasonal scents, and natural elements. Here are some fall home decor ideas.

Layer Pillows for a Cozier Fall Look

Layering pillows is an easy way to transform your living room from a bright, summer-ready look to a cozy, welcoming fall ambiance because they take up little space, are easy to swap out, and, most importantly, let you add warmer colors and texture without changing your furniture!

So, how do you layer pillows? You should have the largest pillows at the back, using neutral shades like ivory or beige as your base. Then, add smaller cushions in front, bringing in colors like burgundy, muted ochre, or rust.

For example, you can combine a solid burgundy cushion with a subtle pattern and a warmer brown textured pillow, then let your neutral backdrop tie everything together.

Tip: If you are worried that the final look would feel 'heavy', you can pair one or two deeper shades and then a neutral palette.

Texture can do just as much as color. For instance, combining a woven cushion with a soft boucle or nubbly fabric creates visual interest even with a fairly restrained palette.

Bring in Texture With Knit Throws

Speaking of texture, you can also add a chunky knit or textured weave, and there are several ways to style one. You can drape a throw casually over the arm of a sofa or chair for a relaxed look. Alternatively, you can fold it neatly when you prefer something more polished. Another way that you could use knit throws to style your home is to roll or fold a few and place them in a woven basket near your sofa or reading nook. For colors, choose warm brown, rust, burgundy, cream, and other earthy shades.

If your pillows feature patterns, add a solid-colored throw with an interesting texture to create a subtle counterpoint.

Tip: Draping a throw over every chair and sofa can quickly make the space look cluttered, especially when you're mixing several colors, patterns, and textures. Ideally, one or two thoughtfully placed throws are more than enough to give a room that cozy fall feeling.

Set the Mood With Fall Scents

Aside from the appearance of your home, you should consider how it smells, too. For fall, you can introduce fall-inspired fragrance with a reed diffuser, smart diffuser, or scented candle, depending on how you want the scent and the styling to work together.

For instance, reed diffusers are better suited to places like the entryway, where you want a consistent background scent. With a smart diffuser, you can decide when it comes on, so you could have fragrance in the morning or evening without running it constantly. Of course, candles bring something different to the room altogether thanks to their flickering flames.

So, which scents are best for fall? You can go the classic route with sweeter gourmand notes like warm cider, vanilla pumpkin, and caramel. If you don't want too much sugary scent, look for fragrances with sandalwood or tonka as the base.

There are less-sweet options, too. Smoked birch, cedarwood, amber, and cardamom all have a warmer, more understated smell that works nicely in a bedroom or living room. For something fresher, look for crisp scents featuring wild plum, apple, leather, and woodland notes. This combo’s fruit notes bring brightness, while the leather and woodier elements add depth.

Tip: Use the same base note throughout your home, and switch up the accent scents in each room so you can achieve a cohesive feel without making every space smell exactly the same.

Refresh Your Bedding With Fall Colors

Your bedroom doesn't need a complete makeover to feel more fall-ready because changing the color palette of the bed can immediately make a noticeable difference, particularly when you move from the bright, lighter summer tones toward warmer, earthier shades.

If you prefer a soft, grounding, and timeless look, choose earthy neutrals such as gray mist, stone gray, oatmeal, ivory, and white snow. For a dash of color, use spring sage for the pillowcases and dusk for the duvet cover.

In our cozy fall bedroom tips, Jolynn of Lofty Design Interiors suggested adding textured pillow in varying sizes and shapes for a more curated feel and look.

Add a Natural Touch With Fall Cuttings

Decorative cuttings can bring the changing landscape indoors.

When choosing cuttings, look beyond color alone. For example, maple and oak branches are great choices when you want big, visible autumn foliage. If you prefer a softer arrangement, you can combine dried eucalyptus, faded hydrangeas, and caspia. You can also add dried grasses for texture and movement while toning down the orange or red colors.

Tip: The vase size should match the scale of the stems. For instance, if you opt for tall branches, you will need a high, spacious vase so that there is enough space for the branches to spread naturally. And yes, statement arrangements are best in an entryway, beside a fireplace, or in a corner that needs a little height.

Welcome Fall with Porch Decor

Don't forget about your porch, too!

Rather than filling every available space, build the look around a few elements and vary color, size, height, and texture.

For instance, for a timeless fall porch decor, you can have pumpkins and gourds. But don't settle for pieces that all look alike. Mix traditional orange pumpkins with heirloom varieties, white pumpkins, and green or speckled gourds.

Placement matters, too. Use larger pumpkins around the base of the door, beside planters, or at the bottom of the steps. Then, medium pieces can build out the group, while smaller pumpkins and gourds fill gaps and create a visual trail along the steps.

You can also add a layer of seasonal color with potted chrysanthemums (mums).

Tip: Try not to introduce too many unrelated flower colors. If the pumpkins already include several shades, choosing mums within one color family gives the display somewhere to rest visually. You can then repeat that color in the wreath.

Speaking of wreaths, a sunflower and harvest wreath with miniature pumpkins, pinecones, berries, and foliage brings a traditional autumn feel. If you prefer a more understated porch, you can opt for a neutral or monochromatic wreath featuring muted eucalyptus, dried wheat, white pumpkins, and natural ribbon.
